MH x Olivia Holden
Olivia Holden, an Ilkley based illustrator, wrote to us this summer sharing kind words about Mauds House and some samples of her beautiful illustrative work, we receive a lot of mail from creatives but Olivia's work stood out from the rest with her style of work being something I could really relate to in my own body of work and love for all things hand drawn. I was a little bit smitten and took no time in getting in touch with Olivia to see if she'd like to collaborate with the shop on a collection of card designs to encapsulate MH for Christmas 2017...
Olivia was born and raised in a small village in Lancashire and started drawing from a young age. After attending a college in Preston where she studied Fine Art, Textiles and English Literature, she moved to Yorkshire in 2015 and obtained a first-class honours degree in Textile Design with Marketing at the University of Huddersfield. Following her degree she didn't really know what direction to take and was unsure about which road she would go down, having just finished Uni Olivia didn't want to commit to a full time job straight away if it wasn't 100% what she wanted. Olivia decided to move down to the little Cornish coastal town of Falmouth to experience a new environment and figure out what she wanted to do and achieve. For Olivia this was one of the best decisions she ever made, it was in Falmouth she really developed her love for illustration and decided to pursue a career in creating illustrations for books and prints.
Being surrounded by creative places and new inspiration helped Olivia build up her portfolio, trying different painting techniques and developing her own illustrative style. After a wonderful and happy year away she moved back up North to be closer to her family and nearer to home. Olivia is now based in Ilkley with the beautiful scenery of the Yorkshire Dales at her fingertips, she often finds inspiration in nature and loves to work on character design with a focus on people and animals.
'My favourite medium to use is acrylic paint because I love to use vibrant colours and create texture with brushes. I enjoy creating artwork that shows an obvious hand painted quality and I love experimenting with unusual colour pairings and watching my illustrations come to life once the colour is added. I feel like my illustrations are ever growing, changing and developing and I am loving what I do and going with the flow of freelance life, meeting lovely people and fellow creatives along the way.
It was a real joy to work with Mauds House on our christmas card collaboration and I feel very privileged to work with such a beautiful shop and such lovely people. Oh and of course I got to meet a very cute shop dog, who turned out to be the biggest artistic muse for my Christmas card illustrations and great for doggy cuddles!'
